Half Term Holiday Procrastination

The Half Term holiday is here and my end of year exams are looming. This week is all about revision, revision, revision. Even the word revision sounds depressing. I'm supposed to do about 3 hours a day and I usually get that done, but sometimes I lose concentration and begin to procrastinate. So here's a list of the things I do when I'm avoiding revision!

I've been watching lots and lots of Gossip Girl recently and I actually finished it yesterday! The ending was so good, they tied it up quite well even if the big revelation didn't make complete sense and seemed a little rushed. Now it's over, I don't really know what to do with all my time, I suppose I should do something productive... I haven't started anything else yet, maybe I'll take a little break from hardcore binge watching  TV shows.

Candy Crush Saga
I play Candy Crush a lot. So much that I'm on level 342! I usually play it while watching YouTube videos or listening to music.

I can't resist chocolate biscuits, that's all that needs to be said here.

Random Things
I made a tower out of Ikea pencils because I have too much time on my hands. Also I did some pretty terrible stenciling of Audrey Hepburn and Elsa from Frozen.

Blog Name Changes

Quick update post for you today. I'm changing my blog name again, sorry! Hattie Humbug sounded rather childish and I don't want a URL that I'm embarrassed of. So the new and final one is Hattie Hards. It's my real name, which I think is safe and comfortable. Creating original usernames is so frustrating as you have to know you will always like it as it's your calling card on the web. This blog me expressing myself so why shouldn't it have my own name on it?
My twitter has also changed @hattiehards

Gun Control

It's going to be quite a serious post today as I'll be talking about something I feel very strongly about, gun control. I don't know why I have such strong views on this subject, it's not an issue in Britain and hasn't personally affected me in any way. It's just something I have strong beliefs about, I even made a speech about it for a school public speaking competition. After the recent shooting in Santa Barbara, California, I thought I should write a post about it.

Gun control laws in Britain are fine in my eyes, it's America who have a serious problem. It is far too easy to get hold of a gun, as Elliot Rodger (son of Hunger Games assistant director, Peter Rodger) illustrated when he killed six people, with guns he bought legally. Rodger had Asperger syndrome and was mentally disturbed as we know from the manifesto he published before going on the killing spree. So why was he allowed to purchase three guns? US gun control is obviously extremely flawed. I suggest America adopts Britain's stance on gun control, including lots of paper work and regulations before anyone can get hold of a gun. Britain now has one of the lowest rates of gun homicide in the world, so we know it works.

Ricardo Martinez, father of victim Christopher sums up my feelings towards this horrific injustice in this video.

I'm not going to go into detail about the NRA and the opposition to tighter gun control because frankly it makes me angry. However I will leave you with some shocking statistics

  • The total number of privately owned firearms in America is estimated to be around 300 million, that’s 89 guns for every 100 people, in Britain that figure is 6 guns per 100 people.
  • There are more licensed gun dealers (123000) in America than McDonalds (13000).
  • US states with high gun ownership levels have double the suicide rates of those with lower ownership level, showing dangers not only to others but themselves.
  • Since Sandy Hook, which was just over a year ago, there have been over 50 school shootings in America.
  • 30 people in America, lose their lives to gun violence each day

1: What are you wearing?
Skinny jeans, a stripey top and a woolen cardigan

Godzilla Review

I hope you're having a good week! I recently went to see the new Godzilla film, so here's what I made of it!

So in this Godzilla film, the famous monster is pitted against two MUTOs (Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organisms). The film follows Joe Brody (Bryan Cranston) and his son Ford (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) as the human race try to make sense of what is happening.

I have to admit, I wasn't crazy about going to see this film, I thought it was going to be too loud and action films don't really interest me. However I was completely drawn into the story and found myself really getting into the experience (I'm pretty sure I punched the air at some point!). I thought the effects were amazing especially all the monster noises! The beginning of the film was a tad tedious, where they don't know what's causing all the nuclear disruption and meltdowns. You know it's obviously a monster from the trailer so the panic and confusion is a little annoying, especially as that part went on for too long. However there was some amazing acting from Bryan Cranston in the beginning, you truly felt all his anguish, pain and desperation. Elizabeth Olsen also gave a heartbreaking performance as Ford's wife, Elle. The balance between the human and monster storylines was perfect.

As the film picked up, some great sequences followed, my personal favourites was when the soldiers parachuted down into the dark city (as seen in the poster below) and when they were trapped on the bridge, while the MUTO passed by. The whole film looked spectacular, a cinematic masterpiece. The first thing I said after leaving the cinema was "that was EPIC". It's really ambitious to try and make a film of this size and they totally pulled it off!

I really enjoyed this film, I highly recommend going to see it!

What's on my Camera Roll

I'm one of those people who saves everything they find when scrolling through social media. I guess the pictures I save tell a lot about me and the things I like. As Karl Lagerfeld said "What I like about photographs is that they capture a moment that's gone forever, impossible to reproduce." Now I'm a big words person, I'd prefer to read a book than look at a painting, but there's something beautiful about seeing something, you can describe beauty a thousand ways and it wouldn't be better than actually seeing it, in person or in a photograph. Not that there's anything particularly beautiful about what I save on my iPod but let's have a look shall we?

These two are just too cute! I watched the Amazing Spiderman 2 a few weeks ago and loved it! Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone play Spiderman (Peter) and Gwen. The story is very focused on their relationship and believe it not, they are actually together in real life! They have such amazing chemistry and make an adorable couple on and off screen.

This is such a beautiful thought. We are so hung up on our flaws that we often forget to correct them, and forget our good points! More people should try to do this, it works wonders for your self esteem!

I tweeted this a few weeks ago but I can't remember where I found it. There's something really romantic and beautiful about rainstorms. There's nothing I like better than sitting inside on a rainy day, preferably with a good book!

This is adorable. Random, I know but still really cute. Unicorns and narwhals, what more do you need?

This is beauty at it's best. I'm a self-confessed chocaholic, so this looks like heaven to me. Wouldn't it be great if when you reached heaven (if it even exists, I'm atheist) there was a big mug of hot chocolate waiting for you!

Hope you enjoyed that post, I'll probably do more soon!

Thursday Thoughts

Thought I'd do a chatty post today. I'm sorry I didn't put up a post on Tuesday, I had awful writers block and just couldn't think of anything to post about. I'm beginning to think this 3 post a week arrangement won't work out so there will be a post every Saturday and one on Tuesday or Thursday, two posts a week.

So how are you today? Only one more day until the weekend! It's revision season, I'm preparing for my end of year exams *groans*. Summer can't come fast enough. I've got some great things planned, I'm going to see Little Mix in June and I'm going to Italy in July! Speaking of things to look forward to, the TFIOS film comes out 19th June! To say I'm excited would be a massive understatement. It's my all time favourite book, never has a book made me cry as much as this one.

Bloggers/Youtubers like Zoella and SprinkleofGlitter inspired me to start blogging and both of them have addressed the issue of Youtube Celebrity in their blog/video. It's a really interesting topic, so click here for Zoe's blog post and click here for Louise's video. Other fun stuff I've been loving on the interwebs are a lovely little quiz to determine what type of unicorn you are, great for procrastinating.

Sorry this was a bit of a short post today, I promise there will be a longer one on Saturday!

Top 3 Summer Reads!

So Summer is approaching, slowly and nervously but nevertheless approaching! Just sit back for a minute and daydream about those lazy hazy summer days, maybe you're sitting by a pool, drink in hand or having a picnic in the park in that perfect sundress or perhaps more realistically you are sitting at home wondering when it's going to stop raining? Whatever you plan on doing this summer, a great book is the perfect companion! Here are my recommendations on what to read this summer! Hopefully this will be a series, as I have a lot of fab books to recommend to you!

Fangirl - Rainbow Rowell
I read this book while on holiday back in Easter and completely fell in love with Rainbow Rowell's writing. Her characters are so lovable and genuine. I think that's why her and John Green are so popular because they write storylines that are relatable and real. That's what makes modern teen books so special, unlike books like the Hunger Games and Divergent, the characters are actually like you, in situations similar to you. Cath is a girl just like us and you root for her like a friend. My favourite parts of the book were definitely the parts with Levi, I just wish all guys were like him. It's a happy book, not much drama or suspense, just a whole lot of heart and warmth.

Eleanor and Park - Rainbow Rowell
Click here to read the blurb
I love this book for all the reasons I love Fangirl, the characters are genuine, the storyline is believable the whole thing screams "I'M JUST LIKE YOU!" More drama and emotion in this one than Fangirl, the backdrop is more gritty. It is a love story, but doesn't fall into the conventional stereotypes we are used to seeing in teen love stories! It's an amazing book for this summer.

Before I Fall - Lauren Oliver
Click here to read the blurb
This is a really thoughtful book, the concept really interested me and it actually inspired me! The thing that really grabbed me about this book was the journey Sam goes on, each day she has learned something. I thought it was going to be a bit fluffy but I was gripped the whole way through! This book was sad, heart-warming and uplifting.

I've worked out a schedule to blog on, you will (hopefully) get a new post every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday!

See you soon!

Love Letters To The Dead

Here's a review on a book I read the other day!

Love Letters To The Dead - Ava Dellaira
Laurel is a high school freshman trying to make friends and get through school. Her English teacher sets an assignment to write a letter to a dead person, Laurel really takes this to heart! The book is her story through the countless letters she writes, to people like Amy Winehouse, Kurt Cobain and Amelia Earheart . Her parents are divorced and her sister May died tragically. The story follows her life as she deals with what's happened and changing.

I absolutely loved this book! I love the format, the characters, everything about it! At first I wasn't sure about Natalie and Hannah, I didn't trust them to lead Laurel down the right path, but as it went on I warmed to them. The book was dark at times, funny and thoughtful. Laurel was a great narrator, she kept the audience in suspense, with just the right amount of personal struggle and naivety to make an interesting read. It's a wonderful book, I recommend it if you like things like Sarah Dessen books and Perks of Being a Wallflower.
I give this book a rating of 9/10!

See you soon!

Jazz Festival

How are you doing today? I hope you had a lovely long weekend! Just a short update post today! Bit of a change here, there was something in my URL that annoyed me, something that could be read wrong so I changed it to Hattie Humbug!

On Saturday I went to the Cheltenham Jazz Festival with my friends. The weather was amazing! I wore a denim jacket, a blue top from H&M, my green Converse and my TopShop blue gingham jeans. I actually raved about the latter two in my April Favourites so Click Here to see that post! I had a heavenly Nutella crepe at one of the stalls there, it was so good that I forgot to take a picture of it and just dived in! It was a great afternoon and it felt like the start of summer in Cheltenham, it seemed like everyone had the same idea!

I'm so excited for summer, especially when it's warm enough for shorts and dresses!

Also I got a new twitter for this blog! Please follow me that would be fab! @hattiehumbug

See you soon!

April Favourites

May is here so here are my April favourites!

Topshop Kohl Eyeliner in Coal
I never usually buy a lot of makeup because I'm only 14 and I don't want to ruin my skin so there probably won't be a lot of beauty favourites for the foreseeable future. However I have been in need of a good quality eyeliner for a long time and when I saw this was only £4, it was love at first sight. The sleek packaging stood out to me first, I don't mean to judge a book by it's cover, but it's just so PRETTY! Despite it's too good to be true price tag I was pleasantly surprised at the quality! It draws a really thin line creating a subtle but effective look. I would really recommend this eyeliner!

Blue Gingham Jeans
I got these trousers from Topshop last week and I'm obsessed with them already! It's not often I buy printed trousers so I'm really excited to wear them. They are perfect for those days leading up to summer where you want to wear summery clothing but it's not appropriate or warm enough to wear shorts or skirts.

Seeing as it's no longer winter boot season, I was desperate for some Spring/Summer shoes to see me through until I can wear flip flops! I spotted these gorgeous pair of Converse All Stars, they cost a pretty penny but I believe that's worth it for how much use I will get out them this season. Also, I ADORE this colour, I've bought quite a few mint green items since!

Gossip Girl
This is my first show on Netflix that I am embarking on, I'm on series 5 out of 6 and loving each episode. It's very girly yet filled with suspense and drama. I'm really getting into it and I don't really want it to end!
I don't tend to buy music, I use Spotify because it's so flexible and easy to use. Recently I've been listening to a lot of Demi Lovato, especially Made In The USA and Skyscraper. I've also been loving Sky Ferreira's song Everything is Embarrassing.
